Curriculum statement.
Beginning in the Pre-school and continuing into the early grades of Primary, the curriculum focuses strongly on numeracy and literacy to build the foundation for all future learning.
In numeracy we use ‘Mastery Mathematics’ which is a maths programme adopted as good practice in many primary schools across the UK.
The programme helps pupils to truly master the concepts of maths and think mathematically, rather than simply copying techniques the teacher has written on the board.
In literacy we use the best UK phonics materials to teach our pupils how to read (and spell.)
Phonics is the teaching of the sound system in the English language.
Our teachers drill the sounds of letters and letter combinations then encourage the pupils to blend the sounds to make words.
The teaching of phonics is accompanied by extensive reading practice using books which are written in such a way
as to reinforce what is taught in the phonics lessons.
Of course we want to see all our pupils excel in national exams in Grade 7 therefore our new lesson
timetable provides sufficient teaching time for the subjects required by the Zambian curriculum.
You will also find our detailed curriculum plans for Reading here and Writing here.
The Zambian curriculum taught at Dayspring follows faithfully the published national curriculum
plan.
We shall ensure that as we teach the content of the national curriculum we shall seize every opportunity to develop pupils’ literacy and mathematics.
Through our clubs programme and through our periodic Super Learning Days (days on which the normal curriculum is collapsed and we devote the entire day to one chosen aspect of learning) we offer opportunities to our pupils in music, art and physical and religious education.
Finally, we encourage our pupils to do everything simply for the glory of God (1 Cor 10 : 31)
